Weekly Playlist | New Adventures In Spotify Volume 9

deep tracks, hidden gems, classic tunes and new releases

Simply put, Steely Dan is one of my absolute favorite bands. It was a real bummer of a day Sunday with the news that Walter Becker had passed. I have read so many terrific remembrances about the talented musician online the last few days.

The best way to remember Walter, and his amazing legacy, is with his music, an indispensable collection of work that will live on forever. So we start Volume 9 with a few of my favorite Steely Dan tunes – in memory of Walter Becker.

When you open up the playlist with The Byrds’ “You Ain’t Going Nowhere” you know it’s going to be a good one. This is followed by a track from Marty Stuart’s latest album, which is easily a top ten for the year so far. The original, Hall & Oates version of “She’s Gone” always reigns supreme, but the Lou Rawls version is right up there for me. Love it! And then it’s one excellent track after the other – from Frank Zappa, Little Richard, and Guy Clark, to Poco, Travis, Jackson 5, Jimmy Cliff and so many more!

Opening up with the wonderful Coleman Hawkins and closing with the boogie-woogie masters J. Geils Band, collection 7 features a mighty mix of rock, soul, jazz, pop, and reggae – just good music top to bottom.

A bounty of A+ music this week, kicking off with one of my favorite Jackson 5 tracks. Ian Fitzgerald’s “Camille” is just one of a ton of amazing songs from this artist I recently added to my favorites list. Jerry Reed, INXS, The O’Jays, Mel Torme, Pokey LaFarge, Carmen McRae, and Talking Heads are just a few of the terrific artists featured this week.

We start the latest collection with a tribute to the wonderful Sam Shepard, who passed away Monday.

The award-winning actor and playwright will be long-remembered for his great film work and numerous plays. My favorite performance will always be his role as Chuck Yeager in “The Right Stuff.” A truly iconic performance. So, in honor of Sam Shepard, Vol. 4 of the playlist begins with a lovely track by Bill Conti from the soundtrack to “The Right Stuff.”
