Weekly Playlist | New Adventures In Spotify Volume 13 (Tom Petty Special Edition)

deep tracks, hidden gems, classic tunes and new releases

Other people much more eloquent than I have already begun using their skills to write about the life and musical legacy of Tom Petty. All I can write is that I’m sad. One of my favorites has passed. Being here in Gainesville, FL adds an extra dose of dejection because this was his hometown – where it all started. The spirit of Tom Petty is strong all over the globe, but really, really strong here in Gainesville.

Today’s playlist is all about Tom Petty, and of course The Heartbreakers. We’re all heartbroken today with the passing of a musical icon. But the music is forever. I decided to pull together some deep tracks I love from the Tom Petty’s discography. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers had tons of big hits, but there are hidden gems across his entire career that demand enjoying along with the classics.

Here is Volume 13 – for Tom.

I have been fortunate enough to see Stew in concert a few times. I have always thought he should be 1000 times more popular than he already is. In between Broadway shows and other creative projects he hasn’t put out a proper solo album since the magnificent Something Deeper Than These Changes back in 2003. The album appears on Spotify, but the songs are not available to stream. Well, two of the songs are available. It’s a bit confusing.

Same goes for the equally great Naked Dutch Painter. It’s there, but only two songs show up on separate pages. This is a huge bummer. Both of the albums are terrific. Luckily, Guest Host is available to enjoy.

And there is only one Negro Problem album to stream, which is a whole other issue for another day. The point is, I am a big big fan of Stew and happy to kick-off the latest collection of music with one of my favorite Stew tunes.

Simply put, Steely Dan is one of my absolute favorite bands. It was a real bummer of a day Sunday with the news that Walter Becker had passed. I have read so many terrific remembrances about the talented musician online the last few days.

The best way to remember Walter, and his amazing legacy, is with his music, an indispensable collection of work that will live on forever. So we start Volume 9 with a few of my favorite Steely Dan tunes – in memory of Walter Becker.
