Atlantic Records is Friday releasing a compilation of recent songs that have inspired silly dance crazes, from the “lean and dab” to the “wobble.”
But the album, “This Is a Challenge,” is also a serious, strategic experiment to save the highly profitable, old-school compilation business for record labels in the streaming era, which is ruled by playlists made by average users and professional “curators” alike. To promote the compilation, Atlantic has asked music-streaming services to keep most of the album’s 15 tracks off their own playlists, and Spotify AB has agreed, according to Atlantic. The album is also for sale in download and CD form.
